What is the Origin of OG?
OG or “Original Gangster” is a term that came from African-American Vernacular English or AAVE. The phrase was coined in LA during the 1970s by the Los Angeles-based Crips gang, the member of the gang identified themselves as OGs or the first gangsters to rise. Eventually, the term was used to define people who were deeply committed to the gang for a brief period of time. The new and younger members of the gang often regarded the older members as OGs.
The term entered the mainstream via hip-hop and incorporated a lot of ideas and words from the gang culture. The reflection of such references can be seen in the rap lyrics throughout the 80s and 90s decades. It was prominent in an Ice-T song named “O.G Original Gangster,” the song made its way to the billboard charts.
Eventually, it appeared on the internet and exploded in popularity in the late 2010s with the rise of platforms like Twitter and Tik Tok.
