Grbs Full Form: GRBS stands for General Random Blood Sugar. The blood sugar level, also known as the blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level, is a measurement of the concentration of glucose in the blood of humans or other animals. 

A 70 kg (154 lb) human has approximately 4 grammes of glucose, a simple sugar, in his blood at all times. As part of metabolic homeostasis, the body strictly regulates blood glucose levels. 

Glucose is stored in the form of glycogen in skeletal muscle and liver cells; in fasting individuals, blood glucose is kept constant at the expense of glycogen stores in the liver and skeletal muscle.

When is GRBS Performed?

Individuals over the age of 45, as well as those with certain risk factors such as obesity, a family history of diabetes, hypertension, or increased cholesterol values, are often subjected to a GRBS at an initial diagnostic or yearly physical. This test can be used with other lab tests such as haemoglobin A1c and oral glucose tolerance testing.

How is GRBS Measured?

The GRBS test determines the amount of glucose in a patient’s blood sample and can be performed without fasting beforehand. A typical result is between 70 and 99 mg/dL; however, a result greater than 200 mg/dL implies diabetes mellitus and additional testing may be required.
