Nishtha Satyam was named Deputy Country Representative for India to UN Women, a United Nations organisation which is committed to working towards women’s empowerment and gender equality in January 2018. Previously, she had also handled Corporate Alliances, Governance Effects and Public Affairs with the UN Women’s Multi-Country Office (MCO) for India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Satyam has also worked as a Contractor in Private Sector Collaborations with the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UNDP and also as an economist for KPMG and American Express. About Nishtha Satyam, the Youngest UN Women Country Representative
Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Delhi, Nishtha Satyam pursued an MSc in International Business from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia. After completing her postgraduate degree, Nishtha worked with KPMG for around four and a half years in managing the business segment, which looks at consultancy companies and sectors in which they are engaged. It also covered purchases of marketing goods.
Then, she began working in the department of economic research, and then she also started to lead it. After consulting with KPMG, Nishtha joined UN Women in private industry collaboration and then became the youngest UN Women Representative in India.
Since 2018, she has also been head of the Multi-Country Office (MCO) in India, one of the biggest and perhaps most influential offices for UN Women. Under her tenure, the MCO has been extended more than twice in its foothold program portfolio across countries like India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. That’s no small feat and she acknowledges her experience of studying abroad with her opportunity to see life from multiple angles and courage to take a stand for gender equality.

Importance of Studying Abroad
Making India proud as the youngest UN Women Representative, Nishtha has always emphasised that studying abroad had given her opportunities to work in a really diverse and international world. Her tenure at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia, was her first tenure as an undergraduate, and it brought her to meet individuals from diverse countries. She says that in her view and perspective, more than just the education that she got, it gave her the opportunity to challenge her own cultural prejudices and see how alike people were across boundaries.
One thing that Sathyam has highlighted is missing homecooked food which studying in Australia. Reflecting upon the time she spent at the University of Nottingham, she eventually thought it was an environment where participants from all around the country and the world were invited, which was really welcoming to her. The hegemony itself is the biggest obstacle to focus on. It’s about thinking and attempting to reach out again to people’s hearts, particularly those who make policies. There is no standard tried-and-tested method to achieve this, which is a big obstacle in seeking solutions that contribute to positive change. The revelation that we have had, particularly through this pandemic, is that the transition is very reversible, based on who is at the forefront of the matter.
Advice for Students Who Plan to Study Abroad
In an interview with Studyinternational.com, Satyam suggests that studying abroad is a really trust-enhancing experience. She believes it gives you the push you need, the challenge and the chance to show yourself to be an autonomous citizen and to expand your outlook on the environment. Learn as many of the books as you may. When you meet someone from another world, consider their customs and their background. Her advice is that her horizon is going to extend from this.
