As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 started off in Dubai from 19th September, many have been wondering about how the cricket players, their teams and staff are ensuring their safety from Covid-19. IIT Ropar’s latest invention which is a room disinfection device named UV SAFE, based on a unique Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) system, is being used to ensure the safety of IPL players at the Dubai Sports City.
The device has a state-of-the-art design, which ensures Zero-shadow 360-degree disinfection through its prismatic body and foldable wings. The wings are specially designed to provide focused exposure on surfaces such as doorknobs, cupboards, tabletops, wall corners, worktops, room fixtures, artefacts, furniture etc. which are among the most frequently touched surfaces. The control panel of the device is housed within its trapezoid base while a removable handle and a magnetic cover ensure a comfortable transit and storage of the disinfection device.
The design and concept of the latest invention were curated by Khusboo Rakha, Assistant Professor at IIT Ropar’s Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department, along with a team comprising Naresh Rakha, a senior scientific officer and Shahriar Reza, a design consultant.
According to Khushboo Rakha, “the device was developed following a consulting project by Noida-based Momentum India. The company had some specific dimensions and we conceptualized and designed it. The device disinfects 200 square feet of area within six minutes and it kills all active viruses and bacteria including coronavirus up to 99.99%.” She also added that the cost of the device was around Rs 1.5 lakh excluding taxes.
The device was tested by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), which is run by the FICCI Research and Analysis Center before being marketed. The device has also been rented by the Mumbai Indians IPL team for its overseas premises apart from being in use at the Dubai sports city.
