What is EAP?
For degree-seeking students, the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is an excellent choice. The program offers English language lessons to non-native speakers in order to prepare them for a degree program. The EAP curriculum is divided into three stages, each focusing on a different skill area: grammar and writing, listening and speaking, and reading and vocabulary.
EAP courses provide developmental (and, in some circumstances, optional) credits as part of a planned academic program aimed at preparing students towards a degree. The program focuses on academic skill development, prospective students should have a basic command of English before enrolling in classes.

General vs Specific EAP
EAP may be classified into two types based on whether the material is general (EGAP, short for English for General Academic Purposes) or particular (EGAP, short for English for Specific Academic Purposes) (ESAP, short for English for Specific Academic Purposes). The students in the class will often determine whether an EAP course is general or specific: if they study or will study a variety of disciplines, the course will be more general; however, if the student’s studies or will study a single discipline, such as Engineering, the content will often be more specifically tailored to their needs, such as laboratory report writing.
Many EAP teachers and authors consider EGAP to be synonymous with study skills since these courses include topics like note-taking, referencing, and participating in discussions, all of which are traditionally considered study skills.
