The University of Lisbon is a public research university in Lisbon and the largest university in Portugal. It was created in 2013 from the merger of two previous public universities in Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon. The history of Lisbon University dates back to the 13th century. The University is deeply involved in Portuguese society and the Lisbon metropolitan area, and accepts its authority to make the city of Lisbon one of the great European capitals of culture and science. The main characteristic of the University of Lisbon is the quality of the research and innovation offered. The culture of the University of Lisbon research schools and units attracts a growing number of international talents to create research projects and fellowships of the highest calibre. It is affiliated with Port-City University League, Compostela Group of Universities, ConfĂ©rence des Grandes Ăcoles and UNICA. University of Lisbon welcomes more than 1,000 foreign students each year in search of a quality education and the culture, climate and hospitality that Lisbon and Portugal have to offer. University of Lisbon is also home to 18 schools and more than 100 research units supported by 4,000 academics. Staff-student groups at University of Lisbon foster the academic spirit and contribute to the full integration of students into the life of the school. The total number of students is 49,198, of which 8,650 are international students. The total number of academic staff is 2,744, and the number of international staff is 101. The number of undergraduate degrees awarded is 8,192, number of master's degrees awarded is 2,468 and the number of doctoral degrees awarded is 436. The number of research-only staff is 658, number of new undergraduate students is 8,375, the number of new master's students is 4,198 and the number of new doctoral students is 919. Deloitte, Siemens, EDP, EY, Microsoft, Galp and other companies recruit graduates from the University of Lisbon.
