The University of Lisbon is a public research university in Lisbon and the largest university in Portugal. It was created in 2013 from the merger of two previous public universities in Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon. The history of Lisbon University dates back to the 13th century. The University is deeply involved in Portuguese society and the Lisbon metropolitan area, and accepts its authority to make the city of Lisbon one of the great European capitals of culture and science. The main characteristic of the University of Lisbon is the quality of the research and innovation offered.
