History, Affiliations and Rankings
National University is a private university based in San Diego, California. Founded in 1971, National University offers degree programs at campuses throughout California, a satellite campus in Nevada, and several online programs. As of 2010, National University was the second largest private non-profit university in California and the 12th largest private non-profit organisation in the United States. By National University's 40th anniversary the system had an endowment of more than $400 million and more than $145 million in real estate. The university had more than 24,000 enrollments with more than 130 undergraduate and graduate programs and 23 teaching credential programs at 28 campuses in California, a satellite campus in Henderson, Nevada, and more than 100 online academic programs. In 2019, T. Denny Sanford donated $350 million to National University to rebrand the university's School of Education as the Sanford College of Education. In addition to the name change, a tuition reduction was announced, helped by Sanford's donation. It is affiliated with the National University System. It is ranked #94-122 in Regional Universities West and #68 in Top Performers on Social Mobility.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
National University has two campuses with the main campus in La Jolla, California and the second in Henderson, Nevada. The university has several student organisations to meet new people, learn new skills and build a support network. The student wellness staff provides assistance with housing, financial and nutritional insecurities, mental health issues, etc. The National University Student Academic Success Centre (SASC) offers a variety of services to support the educational, career, and personal progress of its students. The on-campus writing centre helps students become smart, successful, comfortable, and honest writers through rational thinking, introspection, and solid writing and politics. The National University is known for offering 75 programs at various academic levels in on-campus and online modes. The university offers English language learning programs for students of all levels who wish to improve their professional skills. Accomplishments and Alumni
National University founder David Chigos, who was a retired United States Navy Lieutenant Commander and director of employee training for General Dynamics Corporation in San Diego, saw a need for a non-traditional college education format with high demand and relevant degree programs for Working Adults. By November 1971, the National University had been organised as a private, not-for-profit institute with 27 students attending classes in 1972. About 23,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students are currently enrolled and nine percent of the student body are also in active military service.
