History, Affiliations and Rankings

One of the youngest and the most notable international universities in the Netherlands today, Maastricht University was established in 1976. Since then, it has witnessed exponential growth particularly because of its world-class academic programs with a strong emphasis on internationalization. The University is affiliated with the European Universities Association (EUA), the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) and other multinational education bodies. With over 400 international partnerships, the Maastricht University ranks as the sixth-best Young University in the world in THE Young Universities Rankings. The University managed to climb to #19 in the QS Top 50 Under 50 for the best universities in the world that are under 50 years old.

Infrastructure, Campuses, Courses

Located in the Southern Netherlands and in the heart of Europe, Maastricht University advocates the concept of an International Classroom, where a young and dynamic community of students integrate academic learning with social engagement. The campus consists of multiple historic buildings that constitute wings for different disciplines. For instance, the Maastricht Inner City Campus holds lectures for Business and Economics, Management, Law and Arts and Social Sciences while the Maastricht-Randwyck Campus accommodates courses in Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Psychology and Neuroscience, Science and Engineering. Students can opt from a vast range of disciplines and majors taught in the English or Dutch language, at the Bachelor's, Master's or PhD level along with professional degrees and excellence and honours programmes. 

Accomplishments and Alumni

Maastricht University has a global network of more than 80,000 graduates who continue to expand the global network of the University. Popularly known as the European University of the Netherlands, the University’s international orientation has conferred it the status of the sixth-best Young University in the world and one of the most international universities in Europe. Further, Maastricht University is the coordinator for the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) with more than 20,000 students and 5000+ staff members. The Maastricht University has produced notable personalities across fields such as Sabine Uitslag and Jeroen Lenaers, renowned Dutch politicians, Jean Pieters who is a Dutch biochemist and Professor at the University of Basel and Kelly Weekers who is a celebrated Dutch TV host and Miss Netherlands 2011.  

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

As one of the most international universities in Europe, Maastricht University is committed to nurturing a diverse and inclusive university culture attracting foreign students from around the world. In fact, the University dedicates a specific Diversity Day to nurture its vision of diversity. Over 50% of students and 40% of the staff at the University come from more than 100 countries creating a multicultural-international community. Of the total number of students, 58% were reported to be female students for the academic year 2020-21. Maastricht University offers a hospitable atmosphere for incoming international students via several student clubs and cohorts that organize social events, buddy programs and introduction courses for them to integrate into the University’s culture.
