World Health Day 2023

We all have a tendency to ignore our health till we receive some major warnings or until it deteriorates and causes us to panic. It is conventional for us to place our health at the bottom of our list of priorities. We wouldn’t have given it much thought if there weren’t so many awareness initiatives, campaigns, or talks about it. Every year on April 7th, the World Health Organization celebrates World Health Day in an effort to increase awareness (WHO).

With effect in 1950, the First World Health Assembly resolved to observe World Health Day on April 7 of each year. World Health Day commemorates the creation of WHO and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw public attention to a topic of critical importance to global health each year. World Health Day, along with World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World AIDS Day, World Blood Donor Day, and World Hepatitis Day, is one of WHO’s eight official global health annual campaigns.

History of World Health Day

To discuss World Health Day, we must first discuss the establishment of the World Health Organization as a whole. In December 1945, representatives from Brazil and China proposed the establishment of an all-encompassing and completely independent worldwide health institution.

Half a year later, in July 1946, the World Health Organization’s constitution was approved in New York. On April 7, 1948, 61 countries signed an agreement to establish the Organization, and the constitution went into effect.

They established World Health Day as one of the organization’s first formal initiatives. It was first marked on July 22, 1949, but the date was later changed to April 7, the anniversary of the creation of WHO, in order to increase student participation.

Since 1950, World Health Day has had a different subject each year, which is chosen by the current WHO Director-General based on nominations from member governments and employees.

World Health Day is a global occasion to draw attention to critical public health concerns affecting the international community. On the occasion of World Health Day, promotional campaigns are launched that will go well beyond April 7.
