World Wildlife Day is celebrated on 3 March every year. It is a United Nations International Day that is recognised to celebrate all the wild animals and plants and their contributions that make the lives of us humans better and have a healthy life on this planet. The Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITIES) of Wild Fauna and Flora was signed in 1973. This World Wildlife Day is also a celebration of CITIES on its 50th anniversary. History and Significance
In 2013, on 20 December, the United Nations at its 68th session, in its resolution UN 68/205 decided to proclaim 3 March as the adoption of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Life and Flora (CITIES) in the planet raise awareness and benefits fauna and flora in 1973 as World Wildlife Day.
In this resolution, the General Assembly reassured the utmost importance and value of wildlife and all their ecological, genetic, economical, social, scientific, cultural, educational, recreational and aesthetical aspects to support sustainable development and human well-being.
The Convention is a binding international agreement between the governments to ensure that the trade of wild animals and plant species does not threaten the survival of the species. Presently, it provides a varying range of protection to more than 37,000 species of animals and plants.

World Wildlife Day Theme of 2024
The theme for this year’s World Wildlife Day is “Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation”. This theme focuses on digital innovation and highlights how digital conservation technologies and services can drive wildlife conservation, sustainable and legal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife coexistence.

The theme of World Wildlife Day 2023 is “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”. The theme is decided to honour the people who are making a difference and significantly contributing to sustainability, wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
To further extend the objective of this convention, many UN agencies, philanthropies, private sector organizations, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) must continue their efforts of working for conservation, sustainable use of wildlife, and fight against illegal trade and the depletion of wildlife.
In the times of the present climate change crisis and biodiversity depletion, sustaining existing partnerships and creating new partnerships have become critical for the future of life on Earth.
Importance of Wildlife Management
To promote a sustainable environment and wildlife conservation, a management system for wildlife has become of utmost importance. Wildlife management is the process of influencing the interaction between and among wildlife, its habitat and the people to have the desired impacts. The objective of wildlife management is to provide a balance between the needs of wildlife and the needs of people through the medium of the best available science. The aspects of wildlife management include wildlife conservation, gatekeeping and pest control using disciplines like chemistry, mathematics, ecology, biology, climatology and geography to have the best possible results.
The main objective of wildlife management is to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss on the Earth and take into consideration ecological principles like carrying capacity, succession, disturbance and other environmental conditions like pedology, physical geography and hydrology.
