When is the Zero Discrimination Day Celebration?

Zero Discrimination Day is an annual event which is celebrated on the first day of March. This day was dedicated to fighting systematic and cultural discrimination against people suffering from HIV/AIDS. The first Zero Discrimination Day was celebrated on 1 March 2014. 

This day is celebrated after an organization named UNAIDS, a joint United Nations program on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and (AIDS) launched a campaign against the discrimination faced by HIV/AIDS positive patients i.e. Zero Discrimination Campaign on ‘World AIDS Day’ in December 2013. 

Michel Sidibé the then executive director of UNAIDS launched this day in 2014. He hold a major event in Beijing on the launch of the Zero Discrimination Day.

Zero Discrimination Day Theme 2024

The theme for Zero Discrimination Day 2024 is “To protect everyone’s health, protect everyone’s rights.” This theme emphasizes on building the link in association with human rights and public health in achieving the goal of eliminating AIDS by 2030. The symbol of this day is a butterfly. 

The theme further focuses on the following things:

  • Remove discriminatory laws and policies.
  • Embrace laws that uphold everyone’s rights.
  • Recognize the link between human rights and public health.

Why is Zero Discrimination Day Celebrated?

Zero Discrimination Day is celebrated on March 1st each year for several key reasons:

1. To promote equality before the law and in practice is the prime reason to celebrate this day. The day aims to create awareness and call for action against any form of discrimination, highlighting equality for everyone regardless of their:

  • Race, ethnicity, or national origin.
  • Age, disability, or HIV status.
  • Sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
  • Religion, political beliefs, or social status.

2. To highlight the association between human rights and public health: Discrimination in any form can seriously harm people’s health and well-being. When people face discrimination based on any of the above factors, they may:

  • Have limited access to healthcare services.
  • Experience greater fear, stress, and anxiety.
  • Be more likely to engage in risky behaviours.
  • Face stigma and social isolation, further impact their health.

This day focuses on protecting everyone’s rights is essential for protecting everyone’s health.
