History

Sir Huge Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, came up with the idea to create a book with a list of all the world records and the names of the record holders. In 1951, he was in Ireland where he was watching the fastest-game bird. In 1953, two of his subordinates, Ross McWhirter and Norris were commissioned by him to London. It was in London that they compiled the Guinness Book of Records and established its office.

Guinness Book of Records First Edition consisted of a total of 198 pages and was made available to the public during Christmas. In 1956, it was launched in the USA, where it sold more than 70,000 copies within a year.

This unique idea of keeping all the records in a single place was accepted by readers all over the world and the Guinness World Records became an international authority for keeping records of all types; whether it’s an official sport or not.

In 1976, the Guinness Book of World Records Museum was established in the Empire State Building, New York where all the records were listed. Currently, the Guinness Book of World Records lists more than 40,000 records in multiple fields.
