Indian Coast Guard Day is celebrated on 1 February every year. It was established by the Coast Guard Act, of 1977. The ICG is a multi-mission organization which performs real-life operations at sea such as offshore safety, marine safety, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). ICG started with 7 ships and now its inventory possesses 158 ships and 78 aircraft in its fleet. ICG is the world’s fourth-biggest Coast Guard making India strong to fight against the illegal entrants from the sea.

Indian Coast Guard Day is celebrated on….

The Indian Coast Guard was established on 1 February 1977 and a few months later, on 18 August 1978, the Parliament of India approved the legislation of creating the ICG Day. Since then, India celebrated ICG Day on 1 February. The Government of India started this day to stop the sea-borne smuggling of goods that pose negative effects on the domestic economy of India. ICG also perform rescue operations and save thousands of lives.

Where is the Headquarters of ICG?

ICG is headed by the Director General. DG is the highest post in ICG, he commands and supervises from the Indian Coast Guard Headquarters which is located in New Delhi.

Indian Coast Guard Day History 

Every year India celebrates National Coast Guard Day on 1 February to commemorate the birth of coastal force. In the 1960s, the Indian Navy recognized the need for a special force that is capable of handling smuggling of goods, search and rescue operations, and coastal security. They thought that deploying navy officials for such crimes and rescue operations was not enough. In the 1970s, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea emphasized the need for a dedicated coastal guard to protect the Exclusive Economic Zone and prevent smuggling activities.

Later in 1772, the Nag Committee recommended the formation of ICG. On 1 February 1977, ICG was established with only 7 ships transferred from the Indian Navy. On 18 August 1978, the Parliament of India officially formed the ICG organization and declared 1 February as the Indian Coast Guard Day.

Significance of Indian Coast Guard Day 2024

The Indian Coastline is connected with 9 Indian states Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and West Bengal. It is also connected with Daman Diu and Puducherry.

The ICG Day is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution of the officials who prevent sea-borne smuggling of goods by patrolling territorial waters and combating piracy and terrorism. The motto of the ICG is  “VAYAM RAKSHAMAH – We Protect”.They also conduct Maritime search and rescue operations and save lives during emergencies and disasters. IG is also responsible for the marine environmental protection and offshore development of infrastructure projects at sea.
