Summary of NCERT Class 6 English Chapter 5: The Monkey and the Crocodile

In this story, a monkey lives in a tree by a river and enjoys eating fruits. He is lonely and wishes for a friend. One day, a crocodile comes by, and they become friends. The monkey shares fruits with the crocodile, who visits regularly.

However, the crocodile’s wife becomes jealous and wants to eat the monkey’s heart. The crocodile is torn between his friend and his wife. He decides to bring the monkey to his home with the intention of letting his wife eat him.

So, one day the crocodile asks the monkey to come to his home for a meal. However, on the way to his home, the crocodile reveals his intention to the monkey. The monkey, being clever, realises the plan and tells the crocodile that his heart is on the tree. They swim back, and the monkey escapes to the tree, safely out of reach. He gives the crocodile some fruits for his wife and says goodbye, suggesting they don’t meet again.

The crocodile, realizing his mistake, sadly leaves, having learned a valuable lesson about friendship and trust.

Ans: The monkey’s happiness was incomplete because he had no one to talk to. Therefore, he wanted a companion to deal with his loneliness.

Ans: The crocodile and the monkey usually talked about nearby villages and the problems of the villagers. They often discussed the difficulties faced by the people of the village in growing crops due to no rain. Also, they liked to talk about animals and birds.

Ans: Saddened by this incident, the crocodile shed a few genuine tears. Also, he became wiser with his betrayal of friendship. The crocodile would tell his wife about the importance of friendship and it is wrong to betray the trust of friends.
