NITs came into the picture with the rapid expansion of the technology-based industry to keep pace with the demand for scientific education. At present, there are 31 NITs located in different state territories, all funded by the central government.

The National Institute of Technology offers technical courses like B.Tech, M.Tech and more. Students who perform exceptionally well in the entrance exam get a chance to enrol here for higher education.

Eligibility Criteria For NITs

We have mentioned some details to help candidates who are looking for information about how to get into NIT or want to know the eligibility for B.Tech courses.

  • For General category– students, securing admission to NITs entails obtaining a minimum of 75% marks in the 12th board exams and attaining a decent JEE Mains rank, typically above 95% percentile or around 50k rank, which is generally sufficient for a seat through the state quota in most states, except some top NITs.
  • SC/ST students– SC/ST students have a more accessible path. They need a minimum of 65% marks in their 12th boards and a Common Rank List (CRL) under 2 Lakhs in JEE Mains. Alternatively, if they meet the 12th board criteria and employ a strategic approach in marking the JEE answers, they may secure a seat through their reservation. This highlights a challenging aspect of the Indian reservation system, not factoring in fee concessions post-NIT admission.
