How to Get into NIT: NIT Admission

The NITs, also known as the National Institute of Technology, hold a prominent position as an esteemed engineering institution in the country. These institutes are renowned for being highly sought-after by aspiring engineers who envision a bright future. Nonetheless, securing admission is a challenging task due to the immense competition, with hundreds of thousands of applicants for a limited number of seats for NIT admission. 

To help the applicants secure a seat, we have given a simple guide on how to get admission to NITs. The students who want to get admission into the BTech courses of NIT have to sit for JEE Main. Apart from this, no other mode of admission is accepted by the authorities. 

NIT Admission Procedure

Applicants aiming to secure admission to NITs through the JEE Main examination can refer to the following steps provided below in order to grasp the procedure of being allocated to their preferred institute.

Step 1 – Verify Fulfillment of Eligibility Requirements

To begin with, candidates aiming for NIT admissions via JEE Main must verify whether they satisfy the prescribed eligibility criteria established by the authorities. Only those candidates who meet the JEE Main 2024 eligibility criteria will be deemed eligible for admission. Below, the key eligibility criteria for JEE Main have been enumerated for the candidates’ convenience.

• Candidates must have successfully completed their 12th grade or equivalent qualifying examination within the two years preceding the admission year. Additionally, candidates who are set to complete their qualifying examination in the same year as the admission are also eligible. 
• It is essential for candidates to have passed their 12th grade, regardless of the percentage of marks obtained. They must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in their 12th-grade or equivalent examination, or they should be within the top 20 percentile of their 12th-grade examination. 
• However, for candidates belonging to the SC/ST category, the eligibility requirement is a minimum of 65% marks in the 12th grade or equivalent examination.

Step 2- Complete Registration

The online application form for JEE Main 2024 was made available on the official website. In order to partake in the NIT admission process, candidates were required to submit the JEE Main application form within the specified deadline. As JEE Main is conducted twice annually, candidates had the option to appear for the entrance examination once or during both sessions. It is crucial to note that all information provided in the application form must be accurate and valid.

Step 3 – Entrance Exam

JEE Main is a nationwide entrance examination, which means the competition is highly intense. In order to be considered for admission into NITs through JEE Main 2024, candidates must participate in and successfully clear the entrance examination. JEE Main is conducted in a computer-based format and covers subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Step 4 – Counselling Session

Qualified candidates of JEE Main undergo a centralized counselling process administered by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). During this online counselling session, candidates can register and indicate their preferred colleges and courses from the list of NITs. It is crucial to make careful selections, as it directly impacts their seat allotment. Therefore, candidates are advised to review the mock allotment and make necessary modifications to maximize their chances of securing desired seats.

Step 5 – Admission Confirmation

Ultimately, if candidates are successfully allocated seats in NITs, they must proceed with confirming their admission. This involves freezing their allotted seat and submitting the required seat acceptance fee. To ensure the admission is finalized, candidates must complete the document verification process at designated reporting centres.

What Score is Required for NIT Admission? 

NITs are regarded as esteemed engineering institutions in the country, making them highly coveted by aspiring students. Consequently, the competition to secure admission into NITs is intense. To increase their chances of admission into top B.Tech programs or prestigious NITs, candidates must perform well in the JEE Main entrance examination. 

The minimum scores required for admission vary based on the specific NITs and courses that candidates are targeting. However, to enhance their likelihood of admission into leading NITs for popular B.Tech courses like CSE, EEE, and ME, candidates are advised to aim for scores exceeding 250 marks (75% of the total marks) (for General category candidates).
