Candidates who wish to pursue their MTech at one of the NITs (National Institutes of Technology) in India must be holding valid GATE scores. Those who do not have GATE scorecards can apply for direct admissions (through the institute).

NIT MTech Eligibility Criteria
Candidates looking for admission to the MTech course in the NITs through direct admission must meet certain conditions established by the conducting authorities. Such admission criteria have been developed to assist authorities in determining the eligibility of prospective candidates for admission to NITs.
The NIT MTech eligibility criteria are as follows:
- Candidates must hold a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/ BSc (Engineering) from any notable institution in India.
- Candidates must have qualified for their GATE Exams with the minimum eligible scores, i.e., 60% Marks (CGPA 6.5).
- Individuals with valid GATE scores or UGC/CSIR fellowships are eligible.
- Candidates belonging to marginalised communities such as OC/OBC should be holding qualifying degrees with a minimum aggregate score of at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA.
- Individuals from SC/ST/PwD categories should be holding qualifying degrees with a minimum aggregate score of at least 55% marks.
- It is to be noted that the aforestated scores should be awarded by any notable institution in India.
- Those without GATE scores are required to qualify for the entrance test conducted by NIT. This condition only applies if seats remain vacant after admitting candidates with valid GATE scores.
- Sponsored candidates with the same academic qualifications as above along with a prior work experience of two years are eligible.
- Candidates sponsored by industries/R&D organisations/national laboratories having academic qualifications as above along with two years of work experience are eligible.

NIT MTech Admission Process
GATE scores are required for admission to any of India’s NITs (National Institutes of Technology). Apart from that, candidates without GATE scorecards can also apply for admission alongside GATE applicants. NITs do not conduct any written exams or interview rounds for GATE aspirants.
Prospective candidates must acquire minimal GATE scores to be admitted to NITs. Applicants can refer to the steps outlined below to understand the NIT MTech Admission Process.
Registration
Candidates who have qualified for their GATE exams must register on the CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech./ M.Arch./ M.Plan.) website.
Candidates must complete the following steps during the online registration process:
- Enter the requisite details in the application form.
- Choose your preferred NIT as well as the M.Tech specialisation.
- Confirm your choices with the specified dates.
Seat Allocation
The authorities will further assess the options once they are finalised. Seats are assigned to qualified candidates at this stage. NITs will not send out individual allocation letters to candidates. As a result, it is critical for candidates to acquire their seat allotment details from the CCMT’s official website, https://ccmt.admissions.nic.in/.
Floating/Sliding/Freezing
NITs have a reputation for offering prospective students freedom regarding their seat allocation. In other words, candidates would be able to indicate their preferred seat allotment methods, such as Float, Slide, or Freeze.
- Floating: Applicants will be considered for additional rounds of seat allotment during this phase. Candidates will be able to choose their chosen seat after skipping the first and second rounds of seat allotment.
- Sliding: At this stage, the seat allocations made by applicants in subsequent allotment rounds are determined.
- Freezing: At this stage, a candidate’s seat preference is guaranteed to remain unaltered. Such candidates will be unable to select their preferred seats in subsequent rounds of the admissions process.
