SRAM full form

The full form of SRAM is Static Random Access Memory. SRAM is a type of semiconductor, widely used for microprocessors, electronic devices, and computing applications. Moreover, this semiconductor is volatile in nature which means that the stored data will become unavailable once the power supply is cut. Let’s discover more details about SRAM.

History of SRAM

  • The first SRAM (bipolar semiconductor) was first invented in 1963 by Robert Norman at Fairchild Semiconductor.
  • In 1964, John Schmidt invented the SRAM at Fairchild Semiconductor. During that time, it was a mere 64-bit p-channel meta-oxide semiconductor.
  • Over the years, people started using it in the development of Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor.
  • In 1965, Benjamin Agusta and his team developed a 16-bit silicon memory chip consisting of 4 diodes, 80 transistors, and 64 resistors at IBM.
  • In 1969, Intel also released its first-ever 1101 SRAM chip of 256 bits.

Types of SRAM

Here are five most common types of SRAM that you should know about:

  • Asynchronous SRAM: It can function without a clock signal.
  • Synchronous SRAM: This type of SRAM needs a proper clock signal to function and transfer data.
  • Pseudo-Static SRAM (PSRAM): It is specifically designed to mimic the working behavior of asynchronous SRAM.
  • Dual-ported SRAM: It allows users to connect multiple devices at the same memory location simultaneously.
  • Quad-ported SRAM: As the name suggests, it can connect four different devices simultaneously at the same location.

What are the Characteristics of SRAM?

Below we have mentioned the common characteristics of SRAM which include:

  • SRAM stores data statically which means that it does not have to be refreshed, unlike DRAMs.
  • Each flip flop used in the SRAM to store bits is made up of 4-6 transistors.
  • It is widely used to cache memory for CPUs since they are much more capable of storing data statically.
  • The SRAM is a type of RAM.
  • It also results in less power consumption as compared to DRAM.

What are the Disadvantages of SRAM?

The disadvantages of SRAM include:

  • It is expensive and volatile in nature.
  • It features low storage capacity as compared to other options.
  • SRAM reduces the memory density.
  • Users cannot refresh the program.
  • SRAM can be more complicated for users as it is bigger in size.
