What is the Full Form of SCO?

The full form of SCO is Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It is an intergovernmental organization founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001. Ever since its establishment, the SCO has been primarily focusing on addressing and eliminating regional security issues such as religious extremism, ethnic separatism, regional development, and regional terrorism.

Currently, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has a total of eight members including:

• Kazakhstan
• Pakistan
• Russia
• Uzbekistan 
• Kyrgyzstan
• Tajikistan 
• Uzbekistan 
• Iran 

Interestingly, Iran is the latest member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization which was recently added in 2022. It all happened after the eight countries gave their consent to upgrade Iran’s position to a full member from an observer. However, Iran applied to become a member in 2008. 

Other than these permanent member countries, there are 3 Observer States including:

• Afghanistan
• Mongolia
• Belarus

There are 6 Dialogue Partners:

SCO Structure 

• The Heads of State Council (HSC) is the decision-making body of the SCO.
• The HSC meets once a year to adopt guidelines and make decisions on all the important matters related to their objectives.
• Additionally, the HSC of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization takes the initiative to discuss matters pertaining to economic cooperation and review its multilateral cooperation strategy.
• The organization consists of two permanent bodies including the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) which is based in Tashkent and the SCO Secretariat which is based in Beijing.
