How does MRI work?

  1. Alignment of hydrogen atoms: Our body is composed of numerous hydrogen atoms, which act as tiny magnetic compasses. When placed inside an MRI machine, these atoms align themselves with the powerful magnetic field generated by the machine.
  2. Emission of radio waves: Radio wave pulses are then directed towards the aligned hydrogen atoms. These pulses disturb the alignment of the atoms and cause them to emit their own weak radio signals.
  3. Signal detection and image creation: Sensitive receivers in the MRI machine detect the radio signals emitted by the hydrogen atoms. Based on the different responses of various tissues in the body, a computer creates detailed cross-sectional images and helps doctors visualize the internal structures.
