OPG full form

OPG Full Form: OPG stands for Orthopantomagram. A panoramic scanning dental X-ray of the upper and lower jaw is called an OPG (Orthopantomagram). It is also known by the trade names Orthopantomagraph and Panorex.

It depicts a two-dimensional flattened image of a half-circle from ear to ear. Panoramic X-rays capture images from several angles to create a composite panoramic image that includes the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) in the viewing area.

Structures outside of the viewing area are blurred. Your dentist will most likely do an OPG at some point throughout your dental treatment.

Features of OPG

  • An OPG shows the number, position, and growth of all teeth, including those that have yet to surface or erupt through the gum.
  • It differs from the small, close-up X-rays taken by dentists of individual teeth.
  • It displays less fine detail but a much larger field of view. This is especially beneficial for inspecting difficult-to-see places such as wisdom teeth or the development of a child’s jaw and teeth.
  • It is also frequently used to examine your jaw joint, the TMJ (temporomandibular joint), also known as the CMA (craniomandibular articulation), particularly if you grind your teeth.

Problems Diagnosed in OPG

Here are some problems that can be diagnosed through an OPG:

  • Tooth poisoning and other bone abnormalities
  • Oral cancer and jaw tumour
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Sinusitis
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Jawbone cysts
  • Jaw disorder
  • Tooth infections and decay
  • Dislocated or fractured jaw

Advantages of OPG

The main advantages of panoramic images/OPG are given below:

  • Comprehensive covering of facial bones and teeth, including the TMJ (temporomandibular joint).
  • Low radiation dose to the patient
  • Examination convenience for the patient
  • Capability can be employed in patients who have difficulty opening their mouths.
  • The image can be created in a short amount of time.
  • An excellent graphic aid for patient education and case presentation.
