The full form of PDO is Panchayat Development Officer. A Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) is a government official who works in the Department of Rural Development. His primary duties include supervising the efficient working of the Gram Panchayat and putting into action different government social welfare initiatives, including those for health, education, power, and rural housing.

Responsibilities of PDO

The Panchayat Development Officer is required to carry out the following duties:

  • To exercise all the powers that are particularly granted to him by the Panchayati Raj Act or by the directives of the appropriate authority.
  • To oversee and keep an eye on how Gram Panchayats are run or operating, and to give elected officials advice on how to vote and conduct themselves at Standing Committee and Gram Panchayat meetings.
  • To take the necessary actions to ensure that all of the Gram Panchayat’s development plans and projects are carried out as soon as possible.

Duties of PDO
