Death of Jawaharlal Nehru: A Significant Day in History

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He played a significant role in India’s independence movement from British rule.  His leadership, vision, and dedication to the cause of freedom made him a beloved figure not just in India, but around the world. When Did Jawaharlal Nehru Die?

• Jawaharlal Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, at the age of 74. He died in office at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi.
• The main cause of his death was he suffered a severe heart attack. 
• In the months leading up to his death, Nehru’s health had been in decline, with reports of him suffering from various ailments.

Due to his declining health, he went to Dehradun for a while to take a break from 23rd May to 26th May. On the morning of 27th May, he woke up with back pain and fell unconscious around 6:25 am. After which is suffered a stroke and died at 1:44 pm.

The news of his passing spread quickly, and people from all walks of life mourned the loss of a great statesman and leader. Jawaharlal Nehru was given a state funeral with full honours, reflecting his stature as a national leader.

His birthday on November 14, is celebrated as Children’s Day in India every year., in honour of his love for children and his belief in investing in the future generation. Nehru’s speeches, writings, and contributions to the nation are studied and celebrated by scholars, historians, and political leaders.
