The vice president (VP) of India occupies the second-highest office in the country. These offices are nominal, along with the President. The appointment of the vice president of India is an indirect process. Elections for VP are conducted by using the proportional representation system and the single transferable vote. The position of the Vice President of India is parallel to the lines of the American Vice President. Article 63 of the Hon’ble Constitution of India states and mentions everything about the post of Vice President elections in India

Process of Vice President Elections

The voting of the Vice President is done through the process of proportional representation. Elections using a form of voting known as proportional representation see parties awarded seats in accordance with the number of votes they receive.

The voting process for the Vice President is held through a secret ballot. Members of both houses of parliament make up the electoral college, which elects the Vice President of India. While the nominated members of both houses cannot vote in the presidential elections, they can do the same in the election of the vice president. The members of both houses- elected or nominated cast their vote for the appointment of Vice President. 

Rajya Sabha has 233 members and 12 nominated ones. Lok Sabha has 543 MPs and 2 nominated members. The VP candidate has to deposit Rs. 15,000. 

Following is the eligibility criteria to be kept in mind for a VP candidate

  • Indian Citizen
  • 35 years of age
  • Qualified election as a member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha)

The oath of affirmation signed by the candidate is given below. 

I, ________ do swear in the name of God that I will bear true faith and allegiance to solemnly affirm the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will faithfully discharge the duty upon which I am about to enter.
