What is the Full Form of BIMSTEC? 

The full form of BIMSTEC is Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. It is a regional multilateral organization of 7 member countries from around the world. However, its four founding nations were Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand which together constituted BIMSTEC with EC as Economic Cooperation. The BIMSTEC member states lie on the shore or are adjacent to the Bay of Bengal and are dependent on it. Moreover, BIMSTEC was formed on 6 June 1997, through the Bangkok declaration.

Historical Background of BIMSTEC

• The first BIMSTEC meeting was hosted by India on 21 March 2017. It happened in New Delhi.
• The primary concern of the meeting was to discuss the plethora of common security challenges being faced by BIMSTEC member countries.
• Additionally, the first meeting also highlighted the importance of addressing challenges to human security in the concerned region. 
• The member states also put forward their concerns regarding maritime security.
• Consequently, an agreement was made to help BIMSTEC member states to arrive at common solutions, counter the spread of terrorism, increase law security, and take other necessary measures.

Interestingly, BIMSTEC connects South and Southeast Asia as well as the Great Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal. Currently, BIMSTEC has 7 member countries including:
