Study Abroad: Amid severe labour shortage, new possibilities for overseas students

About 5% of Indian students have moved abroad for higher studies but surprisingly their destinations aren’t UK, USA or Canada but Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, and UAE.

According to a recent survey by University Living, countries such as Germany, Spain, France, Portugal and UAE are now emerging as popular study abroad choices. Due to the pandemic,  the study abroad scenario has significantly transformed and many new courses have become prominent among students. 

Now, students are being more calculative in terms of choosing the study destinations that includes their well-being, mental health and safety, besides their academic performance and participation in extracurricular activities. 

The report says that Germany and Portugal have seen a 7% increase in international students, while Spain, France, and the UAE have witnessed a 2-6% increase. The report also states that around 5% of Indian students traveling abroad for higher studies chose the not-so-popular countries as their study destinations.

However, popular countries such as the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand continue to attract students from across the world. 

More than 90,000 Indian students were issued student visas in the 12-month period ending in September 2021.
