What is Yoga?
As per the Oxford Dictionary, Yoga is “a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation.” The word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means “to join” or “to unite”. It is the union of “Atma” (Individual Consciousness) and “Paramatma” (Universal Consciousness) which indicates a perfect harmony between the mind, body, man, nature, and the universe.

Origin of the International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on the 21st of June. This custom began in 2015. We are so proud to say that this internationally celebrated day was initiated by our very own current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi On 27 September 2017 While he was delivering his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.” – Narendra Modi (UNGA)
After the initial proposal by PM Narendra Modi, UNGA held consultations informally on the draft resolution namely, ‘International Yoga Day, on October 14, 2014. The consultations were mustered by the delegation of India. In the year of 2015, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a 10 rupees coin to mark the international day of Yoga. After this initiative, in April 2017, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued 10 stamps on the Asanas on a sheet to mark this day.

International Yoga Day 2023 Theme
This year will be the 9th edition of international yoga day. The celebration’s theme this year is “Yoga for Unity.” The celebrations around International Yoga Day aim to promote yoga as a daily practice for improved health all over the world and to increase awareness of its comprehensive advantages. The theme was chosen after much deliberation and consultation, and it accurately depicts how yoga assisted humanity in alleviating sufferings during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and how it will continue to do so in the emerging post-Covid geopolitical scenario by bringing people together through compassion, kindness, fostering a sense of unity, and building resilience among people all over the world.
