History, Affiliations and Rankings
The University of West London in the UK traces its history to 1860 when the Lady Byron School was established in what's now the University of West London's Ealing campus. It, later on, became the Ealing College of Higher Education. The Polytechnic of West London was formed in 1991 when Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, Queen Charlotte's College of Health Care Studies, and the London College of Music combined. Under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, the polytechnic became a university two years later. The Privy Council granted authority for the university to change its name to the University of West London in August 2010, after which it was announced that the university would change its name to the University of West London. The university is known for its good employment rate with a wide variety of courses available in different fields of study for both national and international students. The Complete University Guide, the Guardian University League Table, and The Sunday Times Good University Guide all rank the university at #94, #35, and #52 for 2022, respectively.
Campus, Courses and Infrastructure
The University of West London consists of 9 different academic schools that together cover a wide variety and range of subjects for the students. It comprises eight schools, the Claude Littner Business School, the London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, the School of Computing and Engineering, London College of Music, the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare, the School of Law and Criminology, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the London School of Film, Media and Design. The institution includes campuses at Ealing and Brentford, both in West London. The student union, library, and music studios were all renovated as part of a £50 million renovation of the Ealing campus. The School of Human and Social Sciences, the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare, the Claude Littner Business School, and the Nursing Simulation Centre are all located on the Brentford campus. A free shuttle service connects the two locations, which are just 1.5 miles apart.
Accomplishments and Alumni
In the annual National Student Survey (NSS) in 2016, the University of West London received the top scores of any university in Greater London, with student answers indicating that it is the best university in Greater London for student happiness. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide selected UWL as the 'University of the Year' for student experience in 2021. The institution was the only one to receive the Queen's Anniversary Prize for excellent accomplishment and quality in hospitality education in 2009, and it continues to receive accolades from key industry organisations. The University of West London has a list of distinguished alumni members who have ventured on a successful career path for themselves. Some of the notable names include Jim McCarthy, Leyla Hussein and Alex da Kid.
