History, Affiliations and Rankings

Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958, and their first students began studying on their foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, becoming the first university established in the state of Victoria, Australia in over 100 years. It is also the second oldest university in the region. The growth from technology and science specialists to general university was rapid. It was accelerated by a merger with Chisholm Institute in 1990, which saw the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses become a part of the University. A year later the Victorian College of Pharmacy entered into a partnership with Monash that allowed the university to bring Parkville into its portfolio of campuses. Monash became the first Australian university to be approved to operate in China. After a partnership with Sichuan University faded in 2008, Monash continued to search for opportunities for growth in China. After months of negotiations, in 2012 Monash finally formed a landmark partnership with Southeast University (SEU) to open a joint graduate school. Monash University is affiliated with Group of Eight Universities, ASAIHL, World Health Summit, John Monash Science School, and Monash College. The university also ranks in the top 100 world universities in global league tables. QS World University Rankings 2022 and THE World University Rankings 2022 rank the university at #58 and #57 respectively. Additionally, Monash has been ranked #40 in the list of US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Monash University is one of Australia’s largest universities with a presence on three continents along with international partnerships and study abroad programs across the globe. With campuses at Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, Parkville, 271 Collins Street and Law Chambers located in Melbourne’s legal district. Monash University also has learning centres in India, Italy, China, Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a truly international university with a first-of-its-kind alliance with the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Monash University courses are also delivered at other locations, including at Monash South Africa. The University offers around 200 programs in a variety of subjects, including Architecture, Engineering, Fine Arts, Music, Nursing, Business, Arts and Culture and more. Students can enhance their degree programs by selecting from a range of specializations, extended majors and minors across 10 study areas.  

Accomplishments and Alumni 

Monash University was ranked #1 in Australia in Reuters' Most Innovative Universities in Asia-Pacific 2019. In the late 1970s and 1980s, some of Monash's most publicized research came through its pioneering of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Led by Carl Wood and Alan Trounson, the Monash IVF Program achieved the world's first clinical IVF pregnancy in 1973. In 1980, they delivered the first IVF baby in Australia. Monash’s Education has received national and international praise for its education, and 80% of its students find employment within four months of graduation according to the QILT Survey. With an alumni network of 130,000+ graduates around the globe, Monash alumni are creating an impact in multiple fields worldwide. The University’s famous alumni include the likes of Boity Thulo (South African TV Personality, Businesswoman, Model, Actress and Rapper) Alyssa Soebandono (Indonesian Actress and Singer) Joshua Tan (Australian Actor), Muhamad Faisal Manap (Singaporean Politician) and Nikolai Nikolaeff (Australian Actor). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Monash University’s diversity is fleshed out in the fact that the University has opportunities and resources for Indigenous Australians, LGBTQ+ Students and provides Disability Support Services. Most of their accommodation facilities follow a mixed-gender setup. With a student body of 85000+ out of which, 45% are international students, Monash University offers a truly international academic experience. Monash University graduates are at the forefront of social and technological progress in top multinationals. They are noted to be recruited largely by NAB, ANZ, University of Melbourne, Microsoft, Google, PwC Australia and RMIT University
