Key Documents Needed to Take GRE Exam

Some of the key documents that students must take for the GRE examination are as follows:

  1. Valid Identification (ID) – A valid identification card such as a passport, national ID card, or a driver’s license is important. The identification card must have a picture and a name.
  2. GRE Admission Ticket- The entrance ticket or the admit card has to be brought to the exam centre. The admission ticket will have the examination date, reporting time, and location. To download the admission ticket log in to the ETS account and download it.
  3. Name Change Documentation (if applicable)-  Those who have changed their name must present the relevant documents. For example, court orders, marriage certificates, and other legal documents.
  4. Non-English Identification Requirements (for abroad test-takers)- The non-English test taker must present an identity document. The identity document standards might be different for different countries. Generally, the document required to be presented is a passport.

Unacceptable ID Documents

There are several documents that are considered unacceptable. These documents are not considered valid proof of identity. Hence students can refrain from bringing them on the examination center. They are as follows

  • Photocopied or expired documents 
  • Any document that doesn’t have the correct name and last name of the candidate
  • Any document that has been presented at the centre on a cell phone/other electronic devices
  • International driver’s license, and mobile driver’s license
  • International student ID
  • Draft classification card
  • Credit/debit card of any kind
  • Birth certificate
  • Notary-prepared letter or document
  • Social Security card
  • Temporary ID (excluding driver’s license, resident card and employment authorization card renewals)
  • Employee ID card
  • Any document that isn’t recognized by a government agency
  • Diplomatic, consulate, or embassy ID card

  •  Document Authenticity Verification- The document’s authenticity needs to be verified. For example, the validity of the document, and the expiration date. International students must also verify the passport validity and expiration date

Yes. A passport is required to take the GRE examination at any test center. International students have to present their passports as a mandatory requirement.

What documents are required for GRE exam at home in India?

Those taking the GRE exam at home are also required to present a valid identification card. For example, a passport. However, since 2021 aadhar card has also been accepted as a valid document.

Is Aadhaar card acceptable for GRE?

Yes. Aadar card is acceptable for the GRE. Considering the pandemic situation, ETS has allowed the aadhar card as a temporary acceptable identification card for rGRE registration. The changes have been made since July 1, 2021.
