The reforms are an outcome of bilateral negotiations signed between India and Australia previously in May. Additionally, the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) Visa programme scheme was the key feature of the agreement.

However, the MATES Visa programme fee and processing time are yet to be finalised by the authorities.

International students will also be able to avail extra two years of post-study work rights in Australia. It is an addition of 2 years of existing work rights for eligible students who study, work, and live in the regional areas.

As per the deal, not only the Australians aiming to conduct research in India can now apply for an S-5 visa but also can stay in India for up to three years. This can be extended for the entire duration of their research project.
