The Charpak scholarship program was launched by the French Embassy in India to assist Indian students who wish to study for a two-year Master’s degree in France. The Charpak Scholarship was established in honour of French scientist Georges Charpak (1924–2010), who received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics. This scholarship is meant for one to two years of master’s-level study in France (September to June), for all streams and subjects of study.

Eligibility Criteria 

Candidates can refer to the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • The candidate must be a resident of India.
  • A maximum age limit of 30 must be met at the time of application.
  • The candidate must be a young professional working for a firm for no more than three years at the time of application, or a student who is now enrolled in or has previously attended an Indian institution of higher learning.
  • France must be the location of the course. The scholarship will not be given to you while you are studying abroad for at least one semester.
  • Holders of Charpak scholarships who are now finishing their M1 in France will be granted an exemption. To finish their M2, they can apply once again for financing for a second year. At the M2 level, the scholarship is not automatically renewed. Academic achievement at the M1 level and a fresh statement of purpose are requirements for acceptance.
  • The scholarship is not available to non-scholarship holders presently enrolled in M1 in France.

Selection Process 

Academic achievement, consistency, and the strength of the statement of purpose will all be taken into consideration when choosing candidates. The French-speaking candidates will be given preference.  Preference will be given to candidates whose Indian institution and French institution are in the tie-up. 

Application Process 

The applicant needs to apply at https://scholarship.ifindia.in/scholarship/.

Candidates should thoroughly read the application before filling it out. Don’t change the application form’s format; simply fill out each part in Arial, size 10, in the Word format document.

The applicant should also provide a statement of purpose outlining why they chose the French University to which they applied or were accepted, why they would be a deserving recipient of the scholarship, and what their plans are when they complete the program. Additionally, students have to describe how they first learned about the Charpak scholarship program. One to two pages should make up the statement of purpose not more than that.

Candidates would require the following documents to apply for the scholarship:

  • A passport-sized picture.
  • A scanned copy of your passport’s front page.
  • Please affix documentation of your passport application if you will be receiving your passport after the deadline.
  • A complete curriculum vitae.
  • Your letter of admission or acceptance from the French higher education institution, in scanned form. Attach an email conversation to your submission to indicate that you are in the process of receiving the acceptance letter if you missed the deadline.
  • XII Higher Secondary School (XII), Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree mark sheets in scanned form.
  • If applicable, a French language certificate (DELF/DALF)

  • A monthly stipend of 700 euros.
  • Social security coverage.
  • Visa for students and certain fee waivers.
  • Assistance in locating budget-friendly student accommodation.
