What are Prepositions? – Definition

A preposition is the fundamental part of the speech that denotes the relationship of nouns and pronouns with the other elements in the sentence. They are often used to express time, location, direction, or manner. Some common prepositions that class 9 students must know are beside, between, among, beneath, etc.

Types of Prepositions for Class 9

There are several different types of prepositions in English grammar. These include:

✅ Simple prepositions:  All the prepositions that are made up of a single word. For example “on,” “in,” “at,” “by,” “with,” and “for.”

✅ Compound prepositions: Prepositions that are made up of two or more words. For example “in front of,” “on top of,” “out of,” and “according to.”

✅ Phrasal prepositions: Prepositions that are made up of a verb and a particle. For example “look after,” “put up with,” and “get on with.”

✅ Participial prepositions:  Prepositions that are made up of a participle and a preposition. Examples such as  “concerning,” “regarding,” and “including.”

✅ Double prepositions: Prepositions that are made of by combining two prepositions. Examples such as “from behind,” “in between,” and “up to.”
