In a recent development, the Indian Air Force (IAF) unveiled an official video as part of its 91st anniversary celebrations. The video offered a glimpse of the astronaut designates chosen for Gaganyaan, India’s maiden human spaceflight mission.
The IAF’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) has played a crucial role in selecting these individuals and at the same time maintaining utmost secrecy about their identities. However, the IAF has not revealed the faces of the astronauts who have been chosen for this mission.
The video shows their rigorous training in a brief clip. These astronauts will be present in the crew module which has a pressurised earth-like atmospheric condition.
For all those unaware, only 12 of the approximately 60 IAF test pilots were initially considered for the astronaut selection process and were able to pass the “Level-1.” The selection process was held by IAM. In 2019, the last four astronaut candidates were picked.
To train these astronauts, a dedicated training facility has been established near the old airport road in Bengaluru, in close proximity to the HAL airport.
