Summary of NCERT Class 6 English Chapter 3: The Shepherd’s Treasure
“The Shepherd’s Treasure” is about a wise and kind shepherd who lives in a village in Iran. He was very poor. Even though he was poor, he was known for his wisdom and helpful nature. He didn’t go to school because there were few schools in those days. Also, despite being uneducated he understood other people’s troubles and always helped them. Due to this many villagers came to home for advice. The king heard about him and visited him in disguise.
The shepherd treated the king warmly, and the king was impressed by his kindness and wise words. The next day, the king wanted to leave, but the shepherd thanked him for the visit in a clever way. The king saw how wise the shepherd was and made him a governor.
The shepherd, now a governor, remained humble and fair. But some jealous governors spread rumours about him, saying he was dishonest. They were curious about an iron chest he always carried. The king started to wonder about it too.
So, the king called the shepherd to the palace and asked about the chest. When it was opened, all that was inside was an old blanket. The shepherd explained that it was his oldest friend and would still protect him. The king was pleased and knew the shepherd was truly wise. He gave him an even bigger district to govern.
