Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti: 5 March 2024

Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti is observed as the birth anniversary of Dayanand Saraswati, one of the most renowned social reformers and philosophers in India. He was born as Mul Shankar Tiwari on 12 February 1824 in Gujarat. In his early life, he championed the Vedas and advocated for a rational interpretation free from blind faith and distortions. In his quest to reform religion, society, and education, he founded the Arya Samaj in 1875.

During his journey as a reformer, Dayanand Saraswati challenged social evils like the caste system, untouchability, child marriage, and sati, advocating for equality and individual dignity. He gave the motto “Back to the Vedas” to Arya Samaj. With his motto, he asked people to directly study the Vedas and challenge superstitions.

Maha Shivaratri/Shivaratri: 8 March 2024

Maha Shivaratri/Shivaratri is a Hindu festival that celebrates the “Great Night of Shiva.” It is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism. It is observed by millions of Hindus around the world. The festival falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu month of Phalguna (February-March). On this day, Hindus fast, pray, meditate, and stay up all night in worship of Lord Shiva.

On Maha Shivaratri, schools are closed and students are free to participate in the festival’s activities. Many students attend special prayers and ceremonies at temples, while elders fast and meditate at home.

Holi: 25 March 2024

Holi or ‘Festival of Colours’ is a fun festival and a huge celebration in North Indian states like Punjab, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. People of East India and West India also celebrate this festival on a grand scale. Owing to the celebratory nature of this festival, Holi comes with a delightful school break. On this day, students shed their worries along with colourful powders, celebrating the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of the spring season

Thus, school holidays during Holi provide time for families to gather, participate in bonfires, play Holi games and indulge in desserts and savouries. Also, students can enjoy cultural events, learn about the Holika Dahan, and return to school refreshed and energised.

Maundy Thursday: 28 March 2024

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, marking the beginning of a three-day celebration for Christians. In Maundy Thursday services, believers often share Communion, a meal with bread and wine to remember the Last Supper. Some customs include Tenebrae service, a Seder meal, and stripping the sanctuary. This day is significant as it recalls Jesus and His disciples celebrating their final Passover, where Jesus humbly washed his disciples’ feet.

Good Friday: 29 March 2024

Good Friday is a Gazetted Holiday in India. This day falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday. It is a solemn and significant day for Christians around the world. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. On this day, practising Christians perform scripture readings, sermons, and hymns in the Church. Also, some believers abstain from certain foods or pleasures as a form of mourning and penance.

On this public holiday, people get the opportunity to reflect on their moral values through different traditions. Even though traditions differ in different parts of India, Good Friday in the country represents a shared respect for religious diversity and a moment of collective calm amidst daily chaos.

Easter: 31 March 2024

While Easter Sunday itself is not an official school holiday in India, Easter Monday is observed as a holiday in Missionary schools of India. This holiday is very common among the schools of Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, and other states of India like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with a considerable number of Christians. 

On Easter Sunday, practising people attend church services, share meals, decorate eggs, and participate in Easter egg hunts. During these hunts, children are filled with laughter and life. They fill their baskets with eggs and sweets, which symbolise new life. A spirit of renewal sweeps through, as faith, love, and joy dance hand in hand.
