February Holiday List 2024 for Schools

February Holiday List 2024: The second month of the calendar year is the beginning of the spring season in most parts of India. To welcome this season, states like West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Tripura, Punjab, Karnataka, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, etc. celebrate Vasant Panchami. This festival is celebrated to pay tribute to gods for good harvest. Also, this festival is observed as Saraswati Puja in the eastern part of the country. Furthermore, the states of Maharashtra and north India observe Shivaji Jayanti and Guru Ravidas Jayanti in February, respectively. Depending on which state you are in, you get school holidays on these days.

Vasant Panchami / Saraswati Puja: 14 February 2024

Schools across India grant a holiday on Vasant Panchami or Saraswati Puja as this day is celebrated to honour the importance of education in our lives. To honour the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, Saraswati, schools observe puja and invite students and parents to become a part of the celebration. Besides, various communities organise poetry, essay writing and speech competitions for students in their locality to mark the celebration of Saraswati Puja. Even though most parts of India offer reverence to the Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati Puja is very popular in the Eastern states like Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, and Jharkhand.

Also, Vasant Panchami represents the beginning of the Spring season. Celebrated all across India, this day is celebrated with unique traditions in different parts of the country. For instance, in Punjab and Delhi, people fly kites to welcome the spring season. Whereas, people of West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati on this day and prepare delicacies of the season. On the other hand, Karnataka pays tribute to Gods for blessing them with good harvest by preparing local delicacies.

Shivaji Jayanti: 19 February 2024

Schools in Maharashtra grant a holiday on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti each year on 19 February. On this day, Maharashtrians celebrate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.  

In 1870, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule established Shivaji Jayanti, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. He discovered Shivaji Maharaj’s tomb about 100 kilometres away from Pune in Raigad. Pune was the initial location to observe Shivaji Jayanti. Later on, Bal Gangadhar Tilak highlighted the significance of this day in his freedom struggle to incite the love for the motherland among the Marathas.

Guru Ravidas Jayanti: 24 February 2024

Guru Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated to honour Guru Ravidas, a saint from the Bhakti movement in the 15th to 16th century. His birth anniversary is celebrated on Magh Purnima, which is the full moon day in the month of Magh. Although the exact date of his birth is uncertain, it is generally believed that Guru Ravidas was born in the year 1377 C.E. in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This day holds significance, particularly in northern India, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh. It commemorates Guru Ravidas’ birth anniversary.

During the celebration, people reflect on Guru Ravidas’ teachings and his efforts to reform society by challenging and addressing the biases of the caste system. The day serves as a time to remember his contributions to social equality and his impact on the spiritual and cultural landscape.
