Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship: Requirements and Application Process

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship: To help students from low-income backgrounds, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and the Higher Education Department created a scholarship programme funded by the central government. Each year, 82,000 undergraduates and postgraduates are entitled to receive this scholarship. An amount of INR 20,000 awarded as a scholarship is intended to support the student’s living costs while they are enrolled in school. The number of beneficiaries is equal for both genders, which means 41,000 scholarships will be provided to both girls and boys.

Objective of Central Sector Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to meritorious students who come from weaker economic backgrounds to meet their daily expenses while pursuing graduation, post-graduation, or any other professional degree.

Amount Awarded – Central Sector Scholarship

Annually, 82,000 students (41,000 boys and 41,000 girls) are awarded the Central Sector Scholarship. The scholarship is directly transferred to the beneficiaries’ accounts through DBT. Once the CBSE and ICSE amounts have been allocated, the remaining funds are divided evenly amongst the state education boards based on the proportion of the state’s population between the ages of 18 and 25. 

Additionally, the budgeted amount is split in a 3:2:1 ratio amongst the students pursuing a career in science, commerce, and the arts. Here, you can find details on the awards for various courses.

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for the scholarship, students are required to meet certain eligibility criteria, which can be found below:

  1. The annual family income of the students must fall below INR 8 lakhs.
  2. If the candidates are from CBSE, ICSSE, or SEB boards, they must be in the top 20 percentile of the concerned board.
  3. In the reserved categories, students who belong to ST, SC, PWD and OBC will get a reservation of 7.5%, 15%,  5% and 27% respectively.
  4. The students must be enrolled in regular graduation, post-graduation, or professional courses from colleges or universities recognized by AICTE, MCI, UGC, DCI, or other regulatory bodies.
  5. At the time of applying for the central sector scholarship, students must not be availing of any other scholarships.
  6. Students who are enrolled in any diploma course are not eligible for this scholarship.

Important Documents Required

The following is a checklist for all the documents you’ll need to apply for a scholarship through the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme. It is recommended that students have these documents on hand before beginning the registration process.

  1. Proof of identification like the Aadhar card, voter ID, driving license, PAN card, or passport. In case your Aadhar card has not been issued yet, you can use the Aadhar enrollment slip.
  2. Student’s bank passbook (which must be issued in his or her name).
  3. Class 12th marksheet.
  4. Certificate of Income.
  5. Caste certificate (for reserved category candidates).
  6. Disability certificate (if applicable).

Application Process 

  1. New applicants must first register on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) homepage.
  2. Select the undertaking after carefully reading the instructions, then click “Continue.”
  3. To register, please fill out the form and press the ‘Register’ button. The registered phone number will be used to create a student application ID and password.
  4. Once registered, the applicants must use their new ID and password to access NSP.
  5. Applicants can reset their passwords by entering a one-time password (OTP) given to their registered mobile phones.
  6. Once students have updated their passwords, they may access the application on their dashboard and begin filling it out.
  7. Following that, students must upload all relevant documents in the correct manner.
  8. When the application is complete, the candidate must hit the “Submit” button to successfully submit the application.

The Renewal of the Central Sector Scholarship

Students who get a scholarship from the central sector must maintain eligibility in order to keep receiving it. In addition, they need to satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Students must have scored 50% or above on the recent exam.
  2. They are required to keep a 75% attendance at all times.
  3. Candidates must not engage in any bullying-ragging acts.
