OTET Eligibility Criteria: The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha organises an offline Teacher Eligibility Test also commonly known as the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test or OTET. Teachers who are willing to apply in Government, Government Aided and Privately owned Schools in Odisha have to present the OTET Exam scores as mandatory eligibility for the recruitment drive. 

With these scores, they can apply to any of the participating schools which have released teacher vacancies for the year. The BSE offers a TET Certificate on successfully clearing the exam. The teachers are then required to apply for the counselling process via BSE into various preferred centres along with their choice of courses.

OTET Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria help in the assessment of whether the applicant has the suitability and competence to sit for the exam or not. The OTET Eligibility Criteria particularly describes the academic and training qualifications of a candidate to be a teacher. 

The completion of the training courses and final year of graduation as per the eligibility criteria must be met before the date of release of exam notification. The eligibility criteria for the OTET exam is as follows: 

  1. The candidates must be qualified with the minimum required qualifications for OTET in Paper I (Category A) and Paper II (Category B). 
  2. There is a 5% relaxation in qualifying marks for Higher Secondary Education or Graduation for candidates of the reserved category such as ST, SC, SEBC and PwD category
  3. The candidate must have at least attained the age of 21 before applying for the exam. 
  4. Only those who are permanent domiciles of Odisha are allowed to appear for the exam.  

OTET Paper I Eligibility

The eligibility criteria to appear for Paper I or Category A of the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test are given below. The candidate must possess any of the following qualifications for the same.

  1. Attained higher secondary education that is +2 or its equivalent with a minimum score of 50% in the final examination. Along with this, the candidate must have also attained a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or CT.
  2. Attained higher secondary education that is +2 or its equivalent with a minimum score of 45% in the final examination. Along with this, the candidate must have also attained a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education under the guidelines of NCTE. 
  3. Attained higher secondary education that is +2 or its equivalent with a minimum score of 50% in the final examination. Along with this, the candidate must have also attained a 4-year Bachelors in Elementary Education. 
  4. Attained higher secondary education that is +2 or its equivalent with a minimum score of 50% in the final examination. Along with this, the candidate must have also attained a Diploma in Education with expertise in Special Education with a 2-year duration.
  5. Completed Graduation and have also attained a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.
  6. Completed graduation with a minimum of 50% marks in the final year and completed an NCTE-recognised Bachelor of Education degree. In this case, the candidate also needs to complete a 6-month bridge course recognised by NCTE upon being appointed as a teacher within 2 years of recruitment. 

OTET Paper II Eligibility 

The eligibility for Paper II or Category B is according to a specialised teaching format. The candidate must fulfil any one of the mentioned eligibility criteria to appear in OTET Paper II. 

  1. Must have completed graduation with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education. 
  2. Must have attained 50% marks in Graduation along with a 1-year course study of Bachelor of Education.
  3. Must have attained 45% marks in Graduation along with a 1-year course study of Bachelor of Education according to the updated NCTE Regulations.
  4. Must have attained at least 50% marks in Higher Secondary Education along with a 4-year program in Bachelor of Elementary Education. 
  5. Must have attained at least 50% marks in Higher Secondary Education along with 4-year coursework in either of the following: B.A. or B.Sc in Education. 
  6. The candidate is also eligible on completing their graduation with 50% marks and a 1-year B.Ed in Special Education

Conditions of OTET Eligibility Criteria

The applicant who is looking for an application under the eligibility criteria mentioned below has to fulfil the requirements entailed with them upon selection:

  1. Candidates with a D.Ed. (Special Education) or B.Ed (Special Education) have to undergo a Special Programme in Elementary Education recognised by NCTE for a duration of 2 months. 
  2. Candidates in the final year of Teacher Training courses recognised by NCTE or RCI can appear for the category they are eligible for. They will have to produce the documents for proof of completion of the course before recruitment. 
  3. For state or central government-recognised candidates their eligibility must be in accordance with the latest guidelines of the respective institutions. They should also produce proof of eligibility under these criteria at the time of recruitment. The eligibility will be notified by the respective institutions. 

FAQs

Can I apply for OTET after graduation?

Yes, one can apply for the OTET Exam after completing graduation. They must have attained at least 50% marks (45% in case of reserved categories) and also hold a diploma in education/elementary education/special education or a bachelor’s degree in Education to be eligible for the exam.

What is the age limit to apply for the OTET exam?

There is no upper age limit to apply for the OTET Exam. The candidate must have at least attained the age of 21 years to be eligible for the exam. 

How many attempts are allowed for the OTET Exam?

The candidates can give as many attempts at the OTET Exam as they want. There are no restrictions on the number of attempts for the exam.

Is Odia necessary for the OTET Exam?

No, Odiya is not necessary for the OTET Exam. It is included as a choice in both papers. The candidate must however be in a permanent domicile of Odisha to apply for the exam.
