The Poona Sarvajanik Sabha was founded by Mahadev Govind Ranade aka M G Ranade along with the support of his friends. The primary objective of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha was to work towards the welfare of the masses and promote social reforms. The Sabha also focused on issues such as education, women’s rights, and the eradication of social evils. It helped in influencing public opinion and mobilizing the masses for various social causes. Poona Sarvajanik Sabha Founding Members
The Poona Sarvajanik Sabha was established on 2nd April 1870 in Pune. The founders were renowned social reformers and leaders like Mahadev Govind Ranade, G V Joshi, M M Kunte and S H Chiplonkar.
- Mahadev Govind Ranade: Mahadev Govind Ranade is considered the founding member of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. He was a distinguished social reformer, judge, and political leader. He advocated for social equality, women’s rights, and education reforms in the country. His contributions to the Sabha were instrumental in implementing its vision and objectives.
- G V Joshi: Ganesh Vasudeo Joshi aka Sarvajanik Kaka was a lawyer, eminent political activist and social reformer. In 1870, he became one of the founding members of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. Due to his devotion towards Sabha and his strong opposition to British rule, he earned the title of Sarvajanik Kaka.

The Sabha had 95 members who were elected by the nearly 6000 people. Other leaders who helped in the formation of the sabha and contributed to establishing the objectives and visions on the ground were – Bhawanrao Shriniwasrao Pant Pratinidhi ( ruler of the Aundh State), Vishnu M Bhide, S H Sathe, Bhaskar Bhau Ketkar, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, R N Mudholkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, etc. Recently, in 2016, Meera Pavagi was elected as the first female president of the Sabha.
