Who Wrote Akbarnama?

Akbarnama, also known as the “Book of Akbar”, is a historical chronicle that narrates the life and reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. But have you ever wondered who wrote Akbarnama? Akbarnama was written by Abul Fazl, one of the navratnas of Akbar’s court. It is an autobiography of the third Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great. The book was written during the reign of the emperor himself around the 16th century.

Who was Abul Fazl?

The Akbarnama was penned by Abu’l-Fazl ibn Mubarak. He was a trusted advisor and close confidant of Emperor Akbar. He was not only a historian and chronicler but also a skilled poet and philosopher. Abul Fazl’s deep understanding of the intricate workings of the Mughal court enabled him to provide a detailed account of Akbar’s life and achievements in the Akbarnama.

It is important to note that Akbarnama was commissioned by Akbar himself, who was keen on documenting his rule and accomplishments for future generations. The book was written in the Persian language which was also the mother tongue of the Mughals.

The Three Volumes of Akbarnama

The book documented the history from Timur, the forefather of Akbar to the reign of Akbar till 1602. Abu’l-Fazl divided Akbarnama into three separate volumes, each focusing on a different aspect of Akbar’s reign. 

  • The first volume, known as the “Ain-i-Akbari,” provides detailed information on the administration, culture, and society of the Mughal Empire. 
  • The second volume delves into the history of Akbar’s reign
  • The third volume covers the details of Akbar’s ancestors.

Currently, the Akbarnama is preserved and is showcased in a museum in London.
