Who Were Akbar's Son?

Akbar, also known as Akbar the Great, was a renowned Mughal emperor who ruled over a vast empire in South Asia during the 16th century. He was known for his progressive policies, religious tolerance and military conquests. However, have you ever wondered who were Akbar’s son? Akbar had several sons, each of whom played their own role in the court of the Mughal Empire. Akbar had a total of five sons in the hierarchy to the throne. These sons were:

  • Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim (Jahangir)

Born in 1569 as Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim, Jahangir was the eldest son of Akbar and the fourth emperor of the Mughal dynasty. He ascended to the throne after his father’s death and ruled for nearly 22 years until his death in 1627. Jahangir is known for his love of art and culture, as well as his turbulent relationship with his own father, Akbar.

  • Murad Mirza

The second son of Akbar, Murad was born in 1570. He was well-versed in poetry and music and was known for his artistic talents. However, his life was cut short when he was executed by his own younger brother, Jahangir, as part of a power struggle within the Mughal court.

  • Daniyal Mirza

The youngest son of Akbar, Daniyal was known for his military prowess and strategic acumen. Born in 1572, he served as a general in his father’s army and played a key role in several military campaigns. Unfortunately, Daniyal’s life was also marked by tragedy, as he succumbed to illness at a relatively young age in 1604.

Akbar also had several other sons from various of his wives or concubines. Although they died at a young age or in infancy. These include the twin sons Hasan and Hussain, who died in infancy, and Abdullah, who died at the age of 27.
