Administration of the Maratha Empire

From the early 17th century to the early 18th century, various dynasties of Maratha rulers were led by the Chhatrapati or Maratha emperor who founded the empire in the 1670s. 

• The Peshwa, who came into the picture in the 1720s, took control of a vast area of the Indian subcontinent. 
• Although the Peshwas initially served as subordinates to the Chhatrapati, they later became the Maratha leaders and the Chhatrapati’s role was reduced to being just a nominal ruler.
• However, during the 19th century, the Peshwas were eventually reduced to nominal rulers under various Maratha nobles and later the British East India Company. 
• In 1818, the last Peshwa was deposed. Although the Satara Chhatrapati continued to nominally rule over the Satara state until 1848 and the Kolhapur Chhatrapati until 1947, their power was limited.
