1858 – Bahadur Shah Jafar’s deportation to Rangoon
After raising mutiny against India in 1887, Bahadur Shah Jafar II (the last Mughal emperor) was deported to Rangoon.

1966 – India agreed to Sikh demand for Punjabi speaking state
Following the Punjabi Suba movement, India yielded to the Sikh community’s demand to form a Punjabi speaking state on March 9 1966. This led to the formation of Punjab, Haryana and the union territory of Chandigarh.

1993 – AIADMK and Congress cut ties
AIADMK  and congress, who were historical alliances in Tamil Nadu severed their ties.

1996 – India’s victory in world cup quarter-final match
India won the world cup quarter-final (Willis world cup) match against Pakistan in Bangalore. This was also the last match played by Javed Miandad on March 9 1996.

1998 – Vishwanath Anand wins the title
Chess Legend Vishwanathan Anand won the super GrandMaster title in a match against Anatoly Karpov.

141 BC – Emperor Wu Han’s coronation
Emperor Wu Han assumed the throne of the Han Dynasty in China and ruled for 54 years.

1497 – Copernicus records his observation
Mathematician and astronomer Nicholas Copernicus recorded his first astronomical observation.

1522 – The Protestant reformation
On March 9 1522, Martin Luther King began preaching his “Invocavit Sermons” and helped bring a close to the revolutionary stage of reformation.

1776 – Publishing of “Wealth of Nations”
Renowned Philosopher and Economist, Adam Smith published his influential book in Economics, “The Wealth of Nations”.

1822 – First Patent for Artificial teeth
The first-ever patent for Artificial teeth was granted to Charles Graham of New York.

1891 – The Great Blizzard of 1891
The Great Blizzard of 1891 began in England and lasted until March 13; Kills 200 people and 6,000 animals.

1914 – Demand for “urbanization of Mexico”
US senator Albert Fall demanded the urbanization of Mexico.

1918 – Russian Bolshevik to the communist party
On March 9 1918, the Russian Bolshevik party came to be known as the communist party.

1935 – Establishment of the “Luftwaffe”
Adolf Hitler publicly announces the creation of a new air force, the Luftwaffe.

1945 – Independence of Indo – China
During the world war, Indo china (modern day Vietnam, Laos and cambodia) was a french administered possession of Japan. On March 9 1945, Japan withdrew its forces and declared the Indo- china region independent.

1961 – Successful launch of the Sputnik 9
Soviet flight Sputnik 9 carries and returns from orbit a dog named Chernushka (Blackie), frogs and a guinea pig.

1984 – Release of “Borrowed Time”
Beatles Singer John Lennon’s single, Borrowed time was released posthumously.

2015 – Venezuela declared a national threat by the US
US President Barack Obama signs an executive order declaring Venezuela a national security threat to the US.
