A lot of unforeseen events happened in 2020 for which the world was not ready. The year began with Australian bushfires and the world witnessed a pandemic. So,it is safe to say that 2020 will definitely be written down as one of the most important years in human history. As the year is about to end we have wrapped up all the important events of 2020 for you in this blog. Here is a list of top 10 important events of 2020.

Australian Bushfires

Australia faced one of the most devastating wildfires this year. Not only was this one of the most important events in the chapter of history, it was also the most heartbreaking. Australia typically has an annual fire season lasting from september to march but unfortunately this year happened to be extremely hot and dry which created prime conditions for the spread of the fire. This year, the country experienced a devastating wildfire which burned a land of 47 million acres, displaced thousands of people and killed about 34 people. The wildfire came to an end during the end march.

Coronavirus Pandemic

This was the most terrible thing that happened this year and therefore turned into one of the most important events that took place this year. On 9th january, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that a deadly virus named Coronavirus had emerged from Wuhan, China and was spreading across the globe at a really fast pace. It was not long after that almost the whole world went into a state of complete lockdown in order to prevent the spread of the virus. The pandemic disrupted all our lives and caused havoc on earth. Social distancing protocols became mandatory and sanitisation and masks became our necessity. Although the pandemic still isn’t over yet and everyone is taking the necessary precautions but we are a lot closer to getting a vaccine as compared to where we were at the start of the pandemic.

Impeachment of President Donald Trump

The 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump faced an impeachment trial in January on the charges on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Allegations were made on Donald Trump that he had solicited foreign interference in the 2020 US Presidential election to help his reelection bid. He was accused of asking Ukraine to investigate the former Vice-president Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Donald Trump was finally acquitted by the senate of 5th Feb, 2020. It was in the news for a very long time and is definitely in the list of important events this year.

Economic Recession

As numerous countries went into a state of lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the global economy took a major hit and the whole world went into the stage of recession. Covid-19 caused recession in some nations and depression in some others. It is considered to be the biggest ongoing global recession since the great depression. February and March started giving indicators about the upcoming recession as the stock market crashed badly. Dow Jones took the biggest single day hit on March 9,2020.

Black Lives Matter Protests

Black lives matter was the biggest decentralized political and social movement against the doings of a police officer killing Geroge Floyd due to racism. The death of George Floyd sparked major protests and riots all over the world against police brutality and racial injustice. An estimate of 15 to 26 million took part in the black lives matter protests.

Joe Biden won the US presidential election

Former Vice-president Joe Biden, a member of the democratic party won the 2020 US presidential elections by defeating Donald Trump and gave the world one of the most important events in history. He became the 46th President of the United States of America. He will officially be inaugurated as a president on January 20,2021.

Beirut Explosion

On August 4,2020, a massive explosion took place at Beirut port due to the accidental detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate.The explosion killed about 200 people and injured thousands of people badly. The blast destroyed the immediate dockside area, creating a crater approximately 140m (460ft) wide, which flooded with seawater. Satellite images showed that one ship blew completely and was blown out of the water onto the dock side.

Kamala Harris elected Vice-president for the US

Kamala Harris, a member of the democratic party was elected as the Vice-president of the United States of America along with Joe Biden as president. She became the first black woman and first asian woman to become the Vice-president of the US.

Twitter got Hacked!

Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites and twitter getting hacked was one of the most important events of this year. About 130 high-profile twitter accounts got hacked by a group of hackers from Florida on July 15,2020 who carried out a bitcoin scam. The scam tweets asked everyone to send bitcoins to a specific cryptocurrency wallet with the promise of giving back double the amount as a way of giving back to the society. Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Kanye West etc. were hacked.

West Coast Wildfires

Western United States experienced major wildfires in the regions of California, Oregon and Washington which started in mid september. The wildfire burned millions of land and displaced hundreds of people since mid september.  Due to the hot and dry terrains, many of the fires exploded and emerged into megafires.
