1765: Treaty of Allahabad 
On August 12, 1765, the Treaty of Allahabad was signed. The Treaty marked the political and constitutional involvement and the beginning of Company rule in India. It was signed between the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, son of the late Emperor Alamgir II, and Robert Clive, of the East India Company, in the aftermath of the Battle of Buxar on 23 October 1764.

What Happened All Around the World on August 12?

1877: First model for phonograph
Thomas Edison completed the 1st model for the phonograph, which is a device that recorded sound onto tinfoil cylinders on August 12, 1877. Edison was trying to improve the telegraph transmitter when he noticed that the movement of the paper tape through the machine produced a noise resembling spoken words when played at a high speed.

1886: Highest Test cricket score
W. G. Grace made his highest Test Cricket score on August 12, 1886, and scored 170 against Australia at The Oval. William Gilbert Grace MRCS LRCP was an English amateur cricketer who was important in the development of the sport and is widely considered one of its greatest players.

1888: 1st motor tour
Bertha, the wife of inventor Karl Benz, made the 1st motor tour on August 12, 1888. Bertha Benz changed automotive history by packing her two teenage sons into a car and driving to her mother’s house.

1930: Patent for quick freezing food
Clarence Birdseye was granted a patent for a method for quick freezing food- US Patent 1773079 A on August 12, 1930. Clarence Birdseye was an American inventor, entrepreneur, and naturalist considered the founder of the modern frozen food industry. 

1964: Record for Mantle
Mickey Mantle switch-hit the HR record 10th & final time in a game on August 12, 1964. Mantle played his entire Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees as a centre fielder, right fielder, and first baseman.

1973: PGA Championship Men’s Golf
Jack Nicklaus won 3rd of 5 PGA C’ships by 4 from Bruce Crampton of Australia on August 12, 1973. He is widely considered to be either the greatest or one of the greatest golfers of all time. He won 117 professional tournaments in his career. 

2008: Phelps at Beijing Olympics
American super-swimmer Michael Phelps won his 3rd of 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics on August 12, 2008, when he took the 200m freestyle in a world record 1:42.96.

2016: World Record for Ledecky
American star swimmer Katie Ledecky set the world record 8:04.79 to dominate the women’s 800m field at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on August 12, 2016; medal tally of 4 gold, 1 silver made her the most decorated US female athlete at one Olympics. 

2018: 100th PGA Championship Men’s Golf
Brooks Koepka became only the 5th player to win 2 major titles in a calendar year (US Open 2018) when he won against Tiger Woods by 2 strokes on August 12, 2018.
