Stony Brook University, generally acknowledged as a SUNY flagship was founded in 1957 as a college for secondary school Mathematics and Science teacher preparation. The initial campus was built on the site of a former military base in Oyster Bay, Long Island. The University, which is part of the State University of New York system, has grown tremendously and is now recognised as one of the country's most important centres of learning and scholarship. Stony Brook University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The MSCHE is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). It is ranked between #301-350 in THE World University Rankings 2022, between #301-400 in the Impact Rankings 2021 and #125 in the US College Rankings 2022 by the Times Higher Education. It is ranked #=378 in QS World University Rankings 2022.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

On the north shore of Long Island in southeastern New York, Stony Brook University is set on a 1,039-acre campus, New York City is about 60 miles away. The University has two campuses. The university’s main campus, Stony Brook is a sprawling 1,000-acre campus on Long Island's North Shore that houses the main academic buildings, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, and Stony Brook Medicine, the university's hospital. The other campus is located at Southampton. More than 200 undergraduate programmes, 100+ Master's degrees, and over 40 doctoral programmes are available at Stony Brook. There are 12 schools and colleges at the university, namely College of Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Graduate School, School of Journalism, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), School of Professional Development (SPD) and School for Medicine and Health Sciences.

Stony Brook University is one of the most vibrant public universities in the United States, a centre of academic achievement and an important part of the local economy. Stony Brook is one of North America's top 62 research universities. Discovering the causes of lobster mortality in Long Island Sound, seeking for the beginnings of man in Kenya's Turkana Basin, restoring Iraq's public health systems and museums, and administering Madagascar's national parks are just a few of the projects the University’s faculty are active in. The University has a prestigious network of nearly 200,000 graduates applying their skills and expertise across the globe.

Stony Brook has a student body of 24,100 high-achieving students from almost every state and more than 100 countries, including nearly 16,000 undergraduates. For students from various backgrounds, there are numerous organisations, groups, bands, and leagues to join. The University strives to help students discover their potential and find opportunities to engage in College Life. Through these experiences, students develop skills to lead at the University and beyond. Student Centres of the SBU provides access to two prominent student hubs; the Student Activities Centre and The Stony Brook Union. The Career Centre assists students and alumni with all parts of the job search process, including self-audits, job search strategies, résumé and professional branding, and interview skills and practise.
