Charles Darwin University

History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 2003, Charles Darwin University is a public university in Australia that came into existence after the merger of Northern Territory University, the Menzies School of Health Research, and Centralian College. This merger of several higher educational institutions took place over a number of years which resulted in its establishment. It is affiliated with the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL). Charles Darwin is also a member of the group of seven Innovative Research Universities. The university has been ranked 551-600th by the QS World University Rankings 2022 and 501-600th by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The main campus of Charles Darwin University is located in Darwin, with its eight satellite campuses in some of the metropolitan and regional areas. It is a dual-sector university, which highlights its feature of offering vocational education and training courses and higher education undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The university covers a wide range of subjects and disciplines. It consists of six colleges - Asia Pacific College of Business and Law, College of Education, College of Engineering, IT and Environment, College of Health & Human Sciences, College of Indigenous Futures, Arts & Society, College of Nursing & Midwifery. The university also has a number of research institutes and centres. There are a total of 169 courses available at Charles Darwin University. 

Accomplishments and Alumni 

The university has achieved a number of awards for its conservation and Landcare community. Some of them include Environment and Conservation Award NTNRM – 2020 Winner Enviro Collective ‘Conservation on Campus’. It also won the Australian Community Media Landcare Community Group Awards in 2019 for its Lakeside Drive Community Garden. The university was a finalist for the Green Gown Award in 2019. Further, academically the University is among the top 100 universities worldwide for offering world-class quality education and ranks #2 among universities in Australia for graduate employment outcomes. Charles Darwin is also famous for their notable alumni who are well known in their respective fields. Some of these celebrated personalities include, Therese Ritchie (Australian Artist), Vickie O'Halloran (Administrator of the Northern Territory), Loraine Braham, James Burke and Sue Carter (Former Members of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly) and many more. 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The total student population here is around 20,000 out of which 14.2% make up the portion of international students. This 14% consists of more than 2000 students who come from more than 70 countries across the globe. Students here get to experience some really productive opportunities and the after-study employment of Charles Darwin is also good. According to the Good Universities Guide 2021, CDU received five stars for its undergraduate and postgraduate outcomes. Woolworths Supermarkets, Rio Tinto, BHP, Telstra, NT Health, Santos Ltd., KPMG Australia and other academic and corporate organizations recruit graduates from Charles Darwin University.
