ARWU Rankings

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) or ShanghaiRanking is one of the topmost and widely considered university ratings in the world. Furthermore, they release annual publications of these rankings based on various factors.

Formerly, Shanghai Jiao Tong University made the first official list which was compiled and issued in 2003. Hence, the name is derived from the university. However, from 2009 onwards, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which is an independent body releases this list annually.

Nearly 2500 universities are ranked under this system out of which the top 1000 are published. Whereas to decide the criteria, there are six factors used by the ShanghauRanking consultancy. There are mentioned below.

  1. The number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals won by alumni and staff.
  2. Number of Clarivate selected highly cited researchers.
  3. Number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science.
  4. The number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science.
